Everything you’ve wanted to know about PCAs (but were afraid to ask)
At UTS Careers, PCAs are your go-to for practical, peer-to-peer advice. In this blog, we’re answering some of the most frequently asked questions about PCAs: what they do, how they can support you, and why speaking with one might be the smartest move you make this semester.
Q: So, what exactly is a Peer Career Advisor (PCA)?
A Peer Career Advisor is a fellow student trained to support you with career-related questions and challenges. Whether you’re just starting out or already applying for roles, PCAs are here to help you take the next step with confidence.

Q: What can I ask a PCA?
Anything career-related! Janani wants students to know that no question is too small, and no stage is too early to seek support. Whether you’re just starting out, changing direction, or feeling unsure about your next step, PCAs are here to help.
We can assist with resumes, cover letters, job searches, interview prep, LinkedIn profiles, and clarifying your career goals. And if you’re not sure what to ask, that’s completely okay. We’ll work through it together, one step at a time.
Q: Is there anything I can’t ask a PCA?
Great question – and yes, there are a few things that fall outside of what PCAs can help with. Nadine shares, for example, “We can’t tell you what subjects to study or whether you should drop out of your course. Those are big, personal decisions that are best made with your trusted support system (plus would you trust a stranger with that kind of call?). We’re also not the right people to ask about visa requirements or legal matters – those questions are best directed to UTS International or official government sources.”
That said, we can help you explore your options, connect you with the right resources, and support you in making informed decisions. Think of us as your career co-pilots – we’re here to guide, not decide.
Q: Can you share a success story?
Julieanne shared a great example of how PCA support can lead to real results. Over two months, she and Janani worked closely with a student applying for internships. Through regular 15-minute appointments, they helped refine the student’s resume, improve networking strategies, and prepare for interviews with tailored mock sessions.
Thanks to this consistent support and the student’s dedication, they successfully landed the internship. It’s a great reminder that small, steady steps and personalised guidance can lead to big outcomes.
Final question: How can I connect with a Peer Career Advisor?
Reaching out to a Peer Career Advisor is easy – and it could be one of the most helpful steps you take in your career journey. Whether you book an appointment online via CareerHub, drop by our space in CB02.04 during opening hours, or meet us at a workshop or event, you’ll be greeted by someone who understands what it’s like to be in your shoes.
Expect a relaxed, supportive conversation where you can ask questions, get feedback, and leave with practical next steps. No matter where you are in your career planning, PCAs are here to help you feel more confident and prepared.
So don’t hesitate – come chat with us!
