How to launch your digital marketing career: Insights from an agency owner

by Nov 12, 2024

If you’re considering a career in digital marketing, it’s a good place to be — digital marketing skills are in high demand across the board.

But with so many areas to explore (from social media to SEO, paid advertising and beyond), knowing where to begin can feel overwhelming. As someone who studied communication at UTS and runs a digital marketing agency, Branded by Alicia, I’d like to share some practical tips to help you make the most of your time at uni, and set yourself up for a successful career.

1. Make the most of your UTS degree

UTS offers fantastic degrees that give students a solid foundation for a career in digital marketing. Degrees like the Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Communication, and Bachelor of Information Technology include subjects that teach critical skills like marketing strategy, data analytics, and project management.

If your degree offers electives, consider taking units on advertising, social media marketing, or data analytics — these subjects will give you a taste of what working in digital marketing involves. Your coursework also offers opportunities to work on real-world projects, which can easily become portfolio pieces that help you stand out to employers.

2. Never stop learning!

While your degree is an excellent starting point, earning industry certifications and microcredentials can help you stand out. Certifications show employers that you’re committed to continuous learning and equipped with up-to-date knowledge. Plus, some of them are free (including LinkedIn Learning, which you can access via the UTS Library).

Some popular options include:

  • Google Ads Certification
  • HubSpot Inbound Marketing Certification
  • LinkedIn Marketing Fundamentals Certification
  • Meta Certification

Adding these to your resume and LinkedIn profile will complement the knowledge you gain at UTS and show potential employers that you have both academic and industry-relevant skills. Be sure to renew these – some each year!

3. Practical experience is key

Theoretical knowledge is important, but practical experience will set you apart. Take advantage of UTS’s internship programs and industry connections to gain real-world experience during your studies. You could also consider freelancing, interning, or working with small businesses to apply what you’ve learned.

My tip: you never know until you ask. If there is a business that inspires you in the digital marketing world, it never hurts to drop a note to say hi and introduce yourself. Mention that you’re open to some potential internship experience. You never know what opportunities may come your way!

4. Build your professional network

At UTS, you’re surrounded by people with similar career ambitions—use that to your advantage. Get involved in university events, attend industry talks, and join groups like the UTS Society of Communications or UTS Startups.

Make sure you also leverage LinkedIn to build connections beyond uni. Follow marketing professionals and agencies, engage with their posts, and reach out for advice or mentorship. Remember, most people are happy to chat with students and share insights on how they got their start. Everyone that you view as successful has been in the same place you are today.

5. Keep up with industry trends

Digital marketing moves fast, with new platforms, algorithms, and tools emerging all the time. Staying on top of trends will help you feel more confident as you transition into the workforce.

Blogs like Moz, Search Engine Journal, and Marketing Land are full of value. Podcasts can also be another way to stay up to date. One of my favourites is Marketing School

Being constantly immersed in new knowledge will not only come in handy during interviews but will also help you hit the ground running when you land your first role.

I like to call myself a bit of a self-professed “marketing nerd”. In all my experience, chatting with people who are passionate about the industry is where you will learn things about digital marketing that you sometimes won’t find in a blog or podcast.

Remember, networks (are still) so invaluable.

6. Build your portfolio

Even if you don’t have professional experience yet, there are ways to build a portfolio that demonstrates your skills. Include examples from your UTS coursework, personal projects, or freelance gigs.

This portfolio will become a valuable asset when applying for jobs or internships. A lot of the time, attitude and dedication to learning and growing is what shines when a business is selecting its next employee.

7. Explore UTS’s industry partnerships

UTS has partnerships with companies across various industries, which can help you secure internships or even job offers before you graduate. Programs like the UTS Professional Mentoring Platform connect students with professionals, while career fairs give you the chance to meet potential employers face-to-face.

The connections and experience you gain through UTS can make all the difference when entering the job market, so take full advantage of them.

8. Persistence pays off

Kicking off a career takes time and effort, and it’s normal for it to not be a linear process.

Whether it’s hearing “no” from potential employers or feeling unsure about your next steps, persistence is key. The most successful marketers are the ones who keep learning, networking, and applying until they find their fit.

Don’t forget—UTS has career advisors who are there to support you throughout your journey. If you’re feeling stuck, booking a session can help you get on track with practical advice and guidance.

Starting a career in digital marketing can feel like a big leap, but with the right combination of education, practical experience, and industry connections, you’ll be well-equipped for success. UTS offers incredible resources — make the most of your time here by building your network, gaining experience, and earning certifications that complement your degree.

There’s no “right” way to break into digital marketing, but as long as you stay curious and keep learning, you’ll find your way. Good luck — and enjoy the ride!
