Events 101: Mastering the art of professionalism

Attending a career event soon? Whether it’s a social gathering or industry conference, these events present a valuable opportunity for you to gain industry insights, experiences and expertise from people with diverse backgrounds.

To make the most of these types of occasions, it’s important to exhibit professional etiquette as your behaviour and demeanor can have a lasting impact on those around you and on your overall experience as well. With the right approach, you can have an absolute blast while making a lasting impression!

So, to tackle these social waters, here are a few tips for you to have a great time, network and form long-lasting connections.

Tip #1: Show respect

Remember, first impressions matter. Treat everyone with the same respect you’d want to be treated with. Be respectful and courteous to all students, staff members and industry guests alike. Give your full attention to the presenters and avoid using your phone unless it’s necessary.

Tip #2: Punctuality

Arriving fashionably late might be okay for a casual party, but it’s a no-no for professional events. Try to arrive on time for all sessions and activities and return from breaks promptly. If you happen to be late or need to leave early, please do so discreetly to minimise disruptions.

Tip #3: Participation

Make sure to actively participate in discussions and activities, ask relevant questions, contribute thoughtfully, and follow event guidelines for Q&A sessions. However, unless explicitly invited, try to avoid approaching presenters individually after the event to keep things running smoothly.

If there isn’t a set dress code aim for somewhere between smart casual and professional, just to be on the safe side. One of the easiest ways to ensure you come across as professional at an event is to follow the guidelines the event organisers have provided. Follow the event rules and instructions from hosts and staff, adhere to venue regulations and policies, and you’re on your way to appearing cool, calm and respectful.
