Game of Thrones Career Advice!

Game of Thrones fan? Read on to discover what career tips you can take from your fave characters!

(SPOILERS AHEAD)

Varys

Knowing how to network is something Varys does very well. Born as a slave in Lys, he worked his way up from thief to Master of Whisperers by building his network of spies. While most of us (hopefully!) aren’t aiming to become a spymaster, forming connections with people in your chosen field is a great idea! Networking opens the door to industry tips, new opportunities and even potential friendships that could help you on the path to career success.

Theon Greyjoy

Theon hasn’t had an easy go of things, to say the least. Without going into too much detail, he has undergone some pretty brutal experiences after selfishly betraying those closest to him.

While the consequences are nowhere near as horrific, being dishonest in the workplace can create a toxic work environment, and rarely works out well for the perpetrator. Owning up to your mistakes, communicating honestly and encouraging fellow co-workers can help you build your professional reputation, form lasting networks and create a positive work environment.

Tyrion Lannister

Tyrion is a great example of knowing your strengths and playing to them. While those around him have continuously tried to blame, betray, or kill him, Tyrion has managed to thwart almost all attempts by utilising his intellect and ability to strategize. It is these strengths that leads to Tywin Lannister promoting Tyrion to Hand of the King (although that didn’t last long…)

Knowing how to use your strengths is a vital skill in achieving career success. From writing about them in your resume, to utilising them in problem solving situations, knowing what you excel at can help you set successful career goals.

Daenerys Targaryen

Daenerys (displaced princess of the Targaryen dynasty, Khaleesi, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons) has been rather successfully fighting an uphill battle from the get-go. This is due, in part, to her foresight in surrounding herself with experienced advisers she could trust (… mostly trust). Supporters such as Jorah Mormont and Ser Barristan Selmy provided the wisdom and insight she herself had yet to attain.

Taking on a mentor and knowing how to take advice throughout your career, are great steps towards professional success. These people can help you develop your skills, make smart decisions and broaden your perspective!
