Careers fair advice from the experts: Employers attending the 2025 UTS Graduate and Internship Careers Fair
Careers fairs are where the career magic happens. They’re your ticket to discovering epic career paths, connecting with professionals, and scoring valuable insights from recent graduates and hiring managers. This event could be your gateway to many opportunities, but it helps A LOT if you’re prepared!
We’ve connected with some of the employers participating in this year’s fair to gather the most current and practical tips for making a great impression. Who better to provide valuable advice than the hiring managers who will be meeting with you on the day? UTS Careers is hosting the UTS Graduate and Internship Careers Fair right here on campus on Wednesday 26 February 2025 from midday to 4pm.
Some advice from Alstom Group
What are the top 3 pieces of advice you would give to students to help them make the most out of their experience at the careers fair?
- Do some research on your top companies, so you are prepared to discuss how your skills may align to the roles they have on offer.
- Prepare some questions and enter a conversation knowing which questions you’d like answers to, as opposed to asking very basic questions that a little research could’ve answered.
- Make personal connections with the business or HR rep – chances are they will remember you when you apply! Connecting with them on LinkedIn is a great idea, but do remember that recruiters can’t always personally respond to everyone that reaches out right away.
What qualities or skills do you look for in candidates during the careers fair?
I look for candidates who are genuinely interested in learning about our company and will devote some time to building rapport and having a chat about opportunities. Do speak to the business/HR reps clearly and confidently and maintain eye contact. It’s a good idea to come along with some friends, who may have the same questions as you!
How can students effectively follow up with employers after the careers fair?
If you have some specific questions, exchange LinkedIn or email information with the recruiter/business rep and prepare those questions that you’d like answered. Do remember that recruiters can’t always personally respond to everyone that reaches out right away, and will endeavour to reply when they can. Follow the company page on social media (i.e. the company LinkedIn page, GradConnection, Instagram) for updates on opening dates and application process.
Some advice from Transgrid
What are the common mistakes students make at careers fairs and how can they avoid them?
- Failing to research companies or prepare an elevator pitch can make you seem uninterested or unprepared.
- Don’t wait for employers to approach you. Take the initiative to introduce yourself.
- Not dressing professionally.
What types of questions should students ask employers to make a positive impression?
- Company culture: This shows that you are interested in finding a good fit for both you and the company.
- Growth opportunities: Asking about career development and advancement opportunities demonstrates your long-term interest in the company.
What qualities or skills do you look for in candidates during the careers fair?
- Communication skills
- Enthusiasm and passion
- Relevant experience and skills.
Some advice from Gartner
How can students stand out in the crowd?
Develop and practise your clear and concise elevator pitch. Highlight what you’re studying, what makes you stand out (are you an athlete, volunteer, or a member of a student organisation?) and mention your specific career goals and interests.
How can students prepare for the careers fair?
Come prepared with resumes or business cards, the more copies, the better! This provides employers a way to remember you and consider you for current or future opportunities.
Some advice from CrowdStrike
What are some good questions students can ask employers?
- “What are the most important qualities you look for in a candidate for this position?” This helps you understand what they value most.
- “How does your company support professional development and career growth?” This shows you’re thinking long-term and interested in growing with the company.
What qualities do you look for in potential candidates?
We look for candidates who are not only technically knowledgeable but genuinely enthusiastic about their field outside of just the workforce. Show us how you stay in the loop; maybe you’re into industry podcasts, newsletters, or taking on extra studying. That kind of passion really shines through!
