Graduate programs explained: When, where and how to apply
If you’re heading into the final year of your degree, you’ve probably started to think about your post-study options and have come across graduate programs. But what exactly are they, and should you apply for one? Graduate programs are entry-level roles that involve structured learning and development activities designed to help new graduates transition into the workforce. While graduate programs can be competitive, they can also be a great way to kickstart your career in industries like finance, technology, engineering, consulting, and government.
This article will break down everything you need to know about graduate programs, including what they are, when and how to apply, and where to find them.
What can you expect from a graduate program? How is it different from a standard graduate or entry-level job?
A graduate program is a structured career pathway designed for recent graduates, typically lasting 1-2 years. They often include rotations across different teams or departments allowing you to gain exposure to different parts of the business and career paths as well as formal training and development opportunities to help you build industry-specific skills. Structured support networks such as peer connections, coaching and mentorship are also common to assist with your transition into the workforce.
In contrast, graduate or entry-level roles typically involve being hired directly into a specific position within a department. While on-the-job training is provided, it’s usually less formalised than in a graduate program. Career progression in an entry-level role is more dependent on individual performance rather than a predefined pathway. Additionally, while most graduate programs have set recruitment cycles, entry-level roles are advertised throughout the year.
When should I apply for graduate programs? Where do I find them?
Graduate programs typically follow structured recruitment cycles, with most applications opening between February and April the year before the program starts. However, hiring timelines are evolving, and some employers now offer multiple intakes per year, often reopening applications between July and September. If you’re in your final year of study, it’s best to start applying for graduate programs to begin full-time employment the following year, (for example, applying in 2025 for a 2026 start). If you don’t secure a role in your final year, don’t worry! Many companies accept applications from graduates up to 2 years post-graduation. Since application deadlines and eligibility criteria vary, always check individual employer websites to avoid missing out.

What can I expect from the application process?
When applying for graduate programs, remember that each organisation may have its own unique recruitment process and timeline, so it’s essential to research the specific requirements of each before you apply. Generally, however, the process begins with an online application, which might include answering motivational and selection criteria questions and uploading documents such as your resume, cover letter, and academic transcript. You may then be asked to complete online assessments such as cognitive, behavioural or psychometric tests, before being invited to participate in a phone or video interview.
Many graduate programs also include an assessment centre, where you might participate in group exercises, individual tasks, case studies, or presentations. Final-stage interviews may follow, either on the same day as the assessment centre or at a later date, and could be conducted one-on-one or as a panel interview. For technical roles, you might also be invited to complete coding interviews and activities as a part of the application process. As you prepare to apply for graduate programs, remember that early preparation is key. Start researching programs well in advance, noting application dates and eligibility requirements to avoid missing out. Tailor your application to each employer by highlighting key skills and experience relevant to the role and incorporate company research into your responses. Practise for online assessments and interviews, by using available recruitment testing and interview resources available on CareerHub. Networking can also play a big role in your success so make sure to attend careers fairs, connect with alumni, and reach out to professionals in your field. Finally, keep an open mind – while graduate programs are a great pathway, also consider other entry-level roles, internships, or volunteer opportunities that can help you gain valuable experience and build your career.
